Work is defined as the transfer of [[Energy|energy]] when a [[Force|force]] is applied to an object, causing [[Displacement|displacement]]. The most general definition of work
$W=\vec{F}\cdot \vec{d}
$
Where:
- $W$ is work (J)
- $\vec{F}$ is force (N)
- $\vec{d}$ is displacement (m)
Work is only done if displacement occurs in the direction of the force. Positive work occurs when the force and displacement are in the same direction (e.g., pushing a cart forward). Negative work occurs when force opposes displacement (e.g., friction slowing an object).
